Commercial Pilot Training

Of all jobs in aviation, that of the pilot is possible the most sought after. This is because the job assures good salaries, respect and sense of achievement and also the sheer excitement of controlling a machine that soars like a bird in the sky.

The Aviation Growth in India

Aviation Industry in India is one of the fastest growing aviation industries in the world growing at a rate of 15% to 20% per annum. With the liberalization of the Indian aviation sector, aviation industry in India has undergone a rapid transformation. From being primarily a government-owned industry, the Indian aviation industry is now dominated by privately owned full service airlines and low cost carriers. Private airlines account for around 75% share of the domestic aviation market. Earlier air travel was a privilege only a few could afford, but today air travel has become much cheaper and can be afforded by a large number of people. There are more than seven million air passengers in the country, and industry experts say their numbers could easily rise nearly tenfold in five years.

This has meant a massive growth revival in the entire tourism and aviation industries, with increasing job opportunities for trained flying professionals not only with domestic airlines, but also international ones. As the civil aviation sector witnesses rapid expansion, there is a considerable shortage of trained pilots.

The future aviation scenario

The Indian aviation companies have ordered around 800 Boeing and Airbus aircraft. These aircraft are likely to be delivered in next five years. It is estimated that about 8000-10000 pilots are needed within five years. This is just an illustrative scenario as other airlines have also drawn up huge expansion plans.

Advantage of Overseas Training

There are the following major advantages in opting for an overseas flight training school:

  • Infrastructure and Training Facilities
The infrastructure and training facilities available in a flying school abroad in terms of no of aircraft, instructors, training equipment, airport facilities, and ground training aids is far superior as compared to those in India.
  • Time Duration
Due to shortage of aircraft and qualified instructors it takes nearly 3 years for completion of the CPL course in India. Whereas it is just 6 to 9 months in the flying schools abroad.
  • Quality of Training
The quality of instructors in the western foerign schools is better. Also, due to low trainee to intsructor ratio a very intensive, focussed and personalised traning is available. To elaborate further, the training facilities in foreign flight schools are years ahead in sophistication. The teaching methodology is current with modern equipment.
  • International Exposure
The experience of training in an international flying environment is unique. The interaction with the multi-national faculty and students is a great learning experience. The overall exposure in a foreign flying school is life enriching and can not be compared with training in India.

Most of the private air lines recruit fresh CPL holders and pay them a stipend during the training period, which could last for four or twelve months under the supervision on a senior pilot. The first independent job is as a Co-Pilot. Once confirmed with the necessary endorsement, commercial pilots are paid handsomely- between Rs 8 to 12 lakhs annual starting salary, and generous allowances like housing, medical and outstation allowances as well as free confessional air passages for immediate family and dependents.

Promotion to Captain / Commander will come after about 8-10 years of service. The captain of an aircraft has the total responsibility for the aircraft, crew and passengers.

A Pilot can get a job for flying passenger and cargo flights for a domestic or international airline. Or with organizations that maintain their own aircrafts. With the sudden spurt in demand for pilots, since on an average 4 to 10 pilots are required per aircraft, private airlines are offering huge salaries for experienced pilots who have the required endorsements.

Truly, the sky is the limit for pilots!
